Regarding card controls, you can check out Vicente Canuto's book, "Card Magic Fundamentals."
Basically, I think the techniques to master would be:
-Break
-Pass (with this technique, you can move the card to the bottom or top, whichever you prefer)
-In-the-hands shuffle
